After the best performance of his young professional career last weekend at Toronto FC II, Bethlehem Steel FC’s Jake McGuire was voted to the USL Team of the week, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
McGuire turned in another spectacular showing in net for Steel FC, as he helped the club to its third victory of the season. The 22-year-old registered a career-high seven saves at BMO Field, in route to his third clean sheet of the year. The shutout continued McGuire’s rise in the club record book as he became the first Steel FC keeper to register three clean sheets in his first five starts.
After Steel FC pulled ahead on a penalty kick goal, McGuire and his defenders held strong while Toronto FC II looked to tie the match. After a four-save first half, the Chino Hills, Cal., native made a diving save on Shaan Hundal’s shot in the 86th minute to preserve the win and shutout.
A goalkeeper for the Philadelphia Union, McGuire becomes the third Bethlehem Steel FC player to be named to the USL Team of the Week. He joins forward Seku Conneh, who was named USL Player of the Week in Week 3, and defender Hugh Roberts, who’s notching the winning-goal against FC Cincinnati in Week 6.
McGuire and Bethlehem Steel FC will look to continue their strong momentum on Saturday, May 20, when the club faces FC Cincinnati for the third time this season. Steel FC will look for its first season sweep of an opponent. Kick off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Nippert Stadium.
