Midfielder Santi Moar made a surprise visit this week in the Lehigh Valley, assisting with Bethlehem Steel FC's Steel Soccer School program at Central Elementary in Allentown.
Now in its second year, the program allows members of the club to take over physical education classes for all grades. Mixing exercise with a new sport, Steel Soccer School shows kids not only the basics of soccer but how much fun the sport is.
"Just getting to spend some time with the kids through the Steel Soccer School is great," Moar said between classes. "They really like the sport and are willing to learn and some have shown potential. It's great to have a ball and just play the sport."
Each session of Steel Soccer School is molded to each class’s level, with younger students learning to dribble slowly while older students expand with coned dribbling drills and even full-sided games.
Aside from teaching, the program shows Steel FC’s connection with the Lehigh Valley community. Thus far, the team has made over 40 appearances at numerous different schools with much more planned as the program grows and expands in the Lehigh Valley.
Teaching wasn't the only item on the agenda for Moar, as he was told during a question and answer session with a fourth-grade class that he was named a finalist for the USL Rookie of the Year.
