Head Coach Brendan Burke and players Aidan Apodaca and Chris Nanco reflect on the loss to Charleston while looking ahead to Wednesday's rivalry contest against New York

Bethlehem Steel FC Head Coach Brendan Burke
On the Charleston match last weekend…
“I thought we played very well, really proud of the effort. Some young guys got their first starts and first minutes in Michee [Ngalina], Tonny [Temple] and Aidan [Apodaca] and I thought those guys made a good contribution to the game. If it wasn’t for their keeper in the first half, I think we would have been up multiple goals so you have to be happy with the effort. As for the performance, the unfortunate part is that they had two shots on goal and two goals. We have to be a little more stout in our defending but the reality is carried most of the game.”

On having such a quick turnover between matches…
"I think it’s good because when you dominate a game like that and come away with nothing like we did in Charleston, it’s really disappointing so all you really want to do is get back at it. We have that opportunity against an excellent team on Wednesday.”

On preparing for New York Red Bulls II and if it’s easier to prepare given the organization plays the same style from top to bottom…
"I’d say the one thing is that we know each other. We know each other well from the past couple years and the style of play, even if the system changes from time to time, is very similar. We can prepare well and just have to hope we bring the right kind of energy to the game on Wednesday.”

On the intensity level playing against a rival…
"I think it naturally ratchets up a little bit. We met the challenge last year, the first year we didn’t so that was the clear difference for me. We brought the right amount of energy and fight to the game last year.”

Bethlehem Steel FC forward Aidan Apodaca
On getting his first professional start…
"It was good especially going the whole 90 [minutes]. The legs are feeling it [today] but being able to get the start and contribute to the team was great.”

On the mental recovery with such a short turnaround…
"Just getting into training today, even if it’s regeneration, just focusing on Wednesday. We know they are going to bring the energy and the tempo so we have to go out there, respond and bring it back to them.”

On preparing for his first time in the rivalry…
"I’m definitely a little antsy but I definitely expect it to be physical. We just have to bring [the energy] to them and then take [momentum] from them and bring it right back.”

Bethlehem Steel FC midfielder Chris Nanco
On the mentality of playing so many games to close together…
"It was nicer earlier in the season when you had every game on the weekend but there comes a time where you have to play midweek. Just have to go into the game with the same focus. All the guys are healthy, ready and energetic. Everybody is ready to take on Red Bulls on Wednesday.”

On the energy that playing New York brings…
"It’s always a good game when we get to play them. I remember being here last year and the game was very energetic and the game was won in the midfield. It’s going to be very energetic and hard-fought battle in the midfield and hopefully, we can come out on top.”

On if there is more intensity against Red Bulls…
"Yeah, because they are one of the USL teams that have a younger side so they are more energetic as well as us. It’s a bunch of younger players, rookies and second-year guys so it’s a much faster game so it should be a fun one.”
